Healthcare industry’s growth in April trumped that of other sectors

The healthcare industry's growth last month outpaced all other industries, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said earlier this month.

The federal agency noted 19,000 healthcare staff jobs were added in April, 4,100 of which were in hospitals. Home healthcare, offices of doctors and outpatient medical care center jobs as well as other ambulatory healthcare service openings also increased by 15,400 jobs. Residential healthcare and nursing jobs fell by 500.

U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis noted the development and growth demonstrated by April job data in the U.S. produced results that are "durable and steady," according to a press release.

"I would characterize our growth as durable and steady. For 26 straight months, we have added private sector jobs. The national unemployment rate has fallen a full point in the last eight months. Layoffs are continuing to come down and are now back to 2006 levels," she stated.

Career opportunities for managers of medical and health services are projected to grow at a rate of 22 percent in the 10-year period leading up to 2020, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
