Flyover States – More Than Meets the Eye

For those of you who haven’t been fortunate enough to witness, once you hit the Nebraska state lines you’ll see our infamous slogan “The Good Life”. Although I may be somewhat biased as a born and raised Nebraskan, it’s not hard for me to recognize why we are honored with a title such as that.

However, surprisingly enough, non-Nebraskans may disagree. Shocking, right? Now don’t get me wrong…I know Nebraska doesn’t exactly scream “location, location, location” in comparison to other places among the U.S. In fact, most of the states that make up the Midwest probably don’t to most (insert generalization here). But did you know that rural America can have some of the best available opportunities?

Here are a few reasons why:

Pay rate – Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants are in high demand among rural facilities. With that being said, medical providers have more wiggle room to negotiate higher salaries and even other add-ons such as relocation expenses or sign-on bonuses. Facilities in the region are also on the rise with accepting locum candidates rather than just pursuing direct hire candidates. You know what that means? Locums = more money in the NP or PA’s pocket.

Lower cost of living – Congested, urban areas are typically a pricey penny, sometimes doubling or tripling in costs compared to those in a less busy, remote community. Typical expenses such as rent/mortgage, transportation, food, and other resources can be significantly lower in “towns” vs “cities”. The benefit of living and growing in a less crowded area is the ability to still have big city convenience nearby without having to suffer financially.

Flexibility – The second most important aspect of a job is the schedule. While working in the Midwest, many NPs and PAs are fortunate enough to have some independence with their shifts. Having the freedom to somewhat decipher days/weeks is important to any employee, especially if they have other important obligations in their life such as a spouse or children. Medical providers in rural America can have more of a slow, relaxed lifestyle without having to give up excitement in one’s career
