If you have considered a locum tenens position, I am sure that you have done all your research and have your reasons wanting to be a locum tenens physician. I’ve put together a quick note to summarize what physicians reveal to me as to why they got into locum tenens.
Many physicians find that it allows them the opportunity to be their own boss without the worry about staffing a practice, the costs involved, or the paperwork. They choose only the positions that they are interested in and can make their own schedules. A wide variety of shifts/schedules are usually available.
Locum tenens gives them the opportunity to visit other areas and network with new contacts. Different locations and facilities enable them to learn and enhance their skills.
Organizing their schedules is also easy. Allowing the staffing firm or facility to organize their travel and set up lodging takes the burden off of their shoulders.
Money is a driving factor as well. On average, a higher compensation can be expected. For those that are interested in “moonlighting” or making extra income, locum tenens is a great option.
