Study indicates healthcare industry, jobs to steadily grow

Hiring for healthcare career opportunities is projected to continue growing more rapidly than employment in general, according to a nonprofit research organization cited by Government Health IT.

The health system is driving toward emphasizing preventative measures and reduced admissions, according to director Jean Moore with the Center for Health Workforce Studies at the State University of New York at Albany. The center generated projections about employment from the U.S. government’s most recent forecasts for development and growth in the industry, which indicate healthcare staffing has a bright future.

“For a long time, acute-care services tended to trump everything else, and that seems to be changing,” Moore told the news source. “There’s a growing awareness that it’s penny-wise and pound-foolish not to pay attention to preventive and primary care.”

The growth rate for hospitals projects to be roughly 17 percent as the medical centers are forecast to add almost 1 million jobs during the 10-year period leading up to 2020. The main driver of the hiring binge is aging baby boomers and the increased amount of inpatient care they will require.

Doctors’ officers and related healthcare professionals are projected to hire 1.4 million people by 2020, representing a 36 percent increase.
