New Jersey physical therapist runs non-profit helping Haiti, Dominican Republic

The non-profit organization started by a New Jersey physical therapist has grown and increased its work with young people in the Caribbean Sea, according to a published report.

William Pakos, the top official with Children Rising, traveled to Haiti two years ago to help people following the 2010 earthquake, The Jersey Journal reports. The work of the person holding the physical therapy job has stretched to the Dominican Republic, which shares an island with Haiti. He said many healthcare workers have contributed their time to the cause.

"We have been blessed to have a large number of medical workers volunteer to help us," Pakos told the news source. "But if we don't have financial support from the community we are not going to be able to continue our work."

The non-profit has its base of operations at Pakos' physical therapy practice in the North Jersey city of Bayonne. The organization sends teams of physical therapists and speech therapists to both nations to determine the needs of children ages 1 through 6.

Physical therapy career opportunities are projected to develop at a pace of 39 percent during the 10-year period leading up to 2020, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
