Making the most out of your time in college

Do you feel like your college career is flying by? Job hunting was just a speck in the future but with graduation approaching quickly, what seemed a distant reality is now knocking on your doorstep. No need to worry! Here are some quick tips about making the most of your college days in order to help you find that job.

  • Join professional organizations. Most colleges have different clubs and professional organizations. Find the local Student Nursing Association (SNA) on campus and join. If your college doesn’t have a SNA then start one. Most organizations only require a nominal fee and attendance at monthly meetings. It’s a great way to get involved and network with other nursing students. If you’re looking to get some leadership experience, run for office at your school or even at the state level.
  • Hold a part-time job as a CNA or tech while you’re going to school. This allows you to work at a hospital and get yourself in front of the hiring manager. Many hospitals like to hire within because they already know you and your work ethic. Working while you’re in school also shows a future employer that you’re able to juggle school and work.
  • Clinical rotations or internships are a great way to network. The same concept applies as above. A clinical rotation allows the nurses and unit manager to get to know you. If you’re passionate about a specific unit, make sure to let them know you’re interested in being hired after graduating and passing the NCLEX. Sometimes it’s who you know that helps you get your foot in the door. This is especially true in saturated job markets.
  • Network, network, network. Build relationships with your classmates. You never know when you may need to relocate down the road, and a former classmate may work in that city. Network with your professors. Your professors may also work at local hospitals, and they may have good relationships with managers on the units you’re interested in. You can also network through different social media platforms like LinkedIn or Facebook. Many colleges have alumni groups on social media that you can participate in.

Whether you’re just starting your college career or getting ready to graduate soon, try to make the most of your time in college. It will show future employers that you are involved, whether it’s in an organization or holding a part-time job. Make sure to capitalize on any networking connections you can leverage. All of these things will help you with your ultimate goal of finding a job after graduation.
