In the Know: Licensing for Medical Laboratory Professionals

Traveling in the medical laboratory field can be a rewarding and exciting career choice.  I encourage those interested to consider looking into all medical state licenses which will open the doors for a variety of travel opportunities.   Applying for state licenses can be overwhelming so to help you, I want to briefly cover some basic information that you’ll need to know.

According to the American Association of Pathologist’s Assistants, many states have laws requiring the licensing of other clinical laboratory personnel such as medical laboratory scientists, medical laboratory technicians, histotechnologists, and cytotechnologists.

Many of these state laws contain a clause stating that their personnel standards and licensing requirements apply to “anyone performing any examination, measurement, evaluation or testing of any material derived from the human body for the purposes of the diagnosis, prognosis, prevention or treatment of disease.”

States which currently license clinical laboratory practitioners are:

  • California
  • Florida
  • Hawaii
  • Louisiana
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New York
  • North Dakota
  • Rhode Island
  • Tennessee
  • West Virginia

States which are currently considering licensing of clinical laboratory personnel include Alaska, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Vermont, and Virginia.

Please make sure that you follow all the instructions on the state website, make sure all of your necessary documents are together and read through the application thoroughly.  There is a telephone number and an email address which I recommend using if you have any questions before sending your payment and application in.
