Healthcare jobs lead May report from U.S. Labor Department

Healthcare jobs increased by 33,000 in May, bringing to roughly 340,000 the number of jobs the industry has created during the past year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The majority of the medical careers that the sector added last month were in ambulatory healthcare services. Though the U.S. jobless rate climbed from 8.1 percent to 8.2 percent, U.S. Labor Department Secretary Hilda L. Solis noted the economy added a total of 82,000 jobs to the private sector last month.

"Across the board, industry sectors are growing. This month we saw strong growth in health care, transportation and warehousing, and wholesale trade. Also, growth in manufacturing continues to trend up, with nearly 500,000 jobs added over the last 28 months – the strongest growth in manufacturing since April 1995," the secretary said. "This is a critical moment, and more must be done to put Americans back to work. This administration has put forward a number of efforts to support the unemployed and spur more economic growth."

She also noted that U.S. President Barack Obama has forwarded to the U.S. Congress tasks including recognizing companies that return jobs from international locales.

She said Congress should act quickly out of consideration for sustaining the U.S. economic recovery.
