Healthcare industry helped sustain Iowa during rough economic times

Iowa greatly benefited from the healthcare industry during the recession when it managed to boost the number of medical careers in the state, according to The Des Moines Register.

Among the industries that are subject to financial and structural adjustments and  changes from difficult economic times, healthcare has seen significant advances. Since 2007, the number of facilities for assisted living has increased 24 percent to amount to 308, the publication reports.

"We've seen small growth in nursing facilities, but larger growth in assisted living and ancillary services," executive director Steve Ackerson with the Iowa Health Care Association told the news source, also pointing to other sectors of the industry that have seen sizable gains during the period in point. "Home health is probably one of the fastest-growing areas."

From May 2008 to December 2009, the healthcare industry augmented jobs by 5,500, according to state labor statistics cited by the publication. The same period saw the state's non-farm employment drop by 66,600.

One of the industry's most rapidly developing sectors is technicians for medical records and health information, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In the 10-year period leading to 2020, the career is projected to grow 21 percent.
