Are You an Organ Donor?

As a healthcare professional, you have entered into a career where you dedicate your time to helping others. Every day, you are surrounded by people who need care and assistance in getting their health or the health of their loved ones back on track.

For some patients, this requires a new organ or new tissue. Have you gone above and beyond to help these patients? With this question, I mean, are you an organ donor?

Here are some facts, which surprised me, regarding organ donation:

  • More than 1.5 million people are helped through tissue and eye donation each year
  • Donated heart valves can replace damaged ones, allowing the heart to function properly
  • Special grafts help patients with spinal deformities live normal lives
  • Musculoskeletal tissue replaces bone, tendons, and ligaments

  • More than 122,000 men, women, and children currently need lifesaving organ transplants
  • An average of 18 people die each day from the lack of available organs for transplant
  • In 2013, there were 14,257 organ donors resulting in 28,953 organ transplants
  • 90% of Americans say they support donation, but only 30% know the essential steps to take to become a donor
