Travel Therapy: Quick Guide to the PT Compact

By Brady Garza, Social Media Recruiter, Aureus Medical

For those currently in school or looking to begin travel therapy, you may come across something called the Physical Therapy Compact. This is a very important topic as it pertains to all physical therapists and physical therapist assistants. So, here’s a quick guide on how the PT Compact works and how you can learn more!

What is the PT Compact?

The Physical Therapy Compact is an agreement between specific states that allows Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants to work in member locations with an expedited license process. The Physical Therapy Compact Commission partners with the board of licensure in these states to help implement the compact license and processes to obtain the privileges.

How Am I Eligible for the PT Compact?

You are eligible for the PT Compact if your home state is a member of the agreement. You must also hold a current and valid PT or PTA license in that state home state. The Therapist cannot have any encumbrances or disciplinary action against their license.

How Do I know My State’s Status in the PT Compact?

There are four stages a state goes through when becoming a member of the PT Compact agreement:

  • Non-Member State: — The state has not introduced legislation to become a member.
  • Legislation Introduced: The state has introduced legislation to become compact but it’s in the early stages.
  • Enacted Legislation: The state and the PT Compact Commission are working on the processes and agreements for the state to join.
  • Member State: The state offers Physical Therapy Compact privileges.

You can check the PT Compact map to check your state’s current status.

Benefits of the Compact

Having compact privileges is a huge advantage for PTs and PTAs who are interested in traveling. It allows you to receive a license in a fellow member location in a much quicker timeframe (within a week). With that as well, it is a much cheaper process to obtain a license in a fellow compact state than to obtain a license if you are not eligible for privileges.
