Lawmaker files legislation to help vets acquire nursing jobs

A Midwest U.S. congressman introduced legislation to ease U.S. veterans' fulfilment of gainful employment in healthcare jobs, according to The Dayton Daily News.

The bill presented by U.S. Representative Steve Stivers, a Republican from Ohio, also aims to aid veterans' finding jobs in transportation. He said the motive behind the idea came from three veterans in Columbus, the capital of the state he helps represent.

"I am grateful to a group of our local veterans for bringing this problem to my attention," Stivers said in a press release. "With the number of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, we need to make every effort to help our returning troops get back to work right away. There is no reason if someone can perform a job when serving in a war zone, they can't do the exact same job back home, once they leave the military."

The opportunities that Stiver's legislation notes are nursing jobs, including nursing assistant, certified nursing assistant and registered nurse.

The politician introduced the legislation late last month after the three veterans prompted the idea during a roundtable discussion with the congressman in 2011.
