Late nursing alum honored at NW Indiana hospital

The nursing museum at a Northwest Indiana hospital was re-named to honor a woman who died in October of last year, according to the Post-Tribune.

Now named the Hazel Witte School of Nursing Museum, the facility is in the administration building of the Methodist Hospital. Witte graduated in 1945 from the Methodist Hospital’s Nursing School.

“This is a special day, not only for Methodist Hospital, but the public as well,” chief executive officer Ian McFadden said. “We’ve had almost 800 graduates through the years of the school’s 44-year history, and this museum is a testimonial to what they achieved.”

Virginia Bush, one of Witte’s classmates, expressed delight with the objects gathered in the rooms, noting she thought she would never see them again since nursing jobs have changed. She pointed to Bunsen burners used for boiling needles and gloves made of rubber that were cleaned for re-use rather than disposed of.

The Methodist Hospital last year devoted roughly $35 million to new technology, upgrading the facility and programs that would benefit the safety, comfort and quality of care for patients, according to the hospital’s website.
