Healthcare careers in high demand in Wisconsin

Healthcare careers have been growing around the country at a rapid clip, and Wisconsin is no exception.

The Badger State's Department of Workforce Development employment projections show registered nurses as the most in demand profession in the period leading up to 2018. The agency projects that ambulatory healthcare services and hospitals will be the number one and two industries with the most new jobs over the same time frame.

Denis Winters, the chief labor economist at the Department of Workforce Development, told TheNorthwestern.com that the baby boomer population reaching retirement age will be a major factor in the demand for people with nursing jobs.

"What it boils down to is the aging boomers and retirements are going to affect healthcare in two areas," he said. "On the demand side, as people get older, that will place more demand on health care services. And as boomers retire, you're taking a significant number of people out of the workforce."

The news provider reports that a number of people in Wisconsin are pursuing a second career in healthcare. However, there is still a high demand for medical staffing professionals in the state.
