Quick Health Tips for Summer to Fall

Believe it or not, the fall season is quickly approaching. For many, this time of year signals going back to school, harvesting, and premiers of favorite TV shows. As a born and raised Nebraskan, I can attest to having one thing on my mind come fall time – Husker football! Can you feel it? Although the brisk air and changing of leaves is something anyone can appreciate, this time of year also brings change with our diet and exercise.

During the summer months, we have the pleasure of storing our refrigerators with fresh produce from readily available farmers markets or our very own gardens. These are healthy and economical choices. Here at Aureus Medical, we even get to enjoy the convenience of having our own farmers’ market right in our parking lot. The summer months also give us longer days that allow us to fit in our daily regimens. Not to mention, there are other extracurricular activities we can partake in that are deemed more appropriate during this time of year such as sand volleyball. However, once fall is upon us, the balance of a hearty diet and staying in shape becomes harder to maintain. Here are some tips that will help with a smooth transition:

            1. Store leftovers: Produce from the summer can actually be frozen to be used at a later time. For vegetables, be sure to trim, wash, and peel (if necessary). You will also need to blanch (bring to a boil and cook 1-2 minutes) and dry before freezing. For fruits, wash, dry, remove cores/pits, and cut to size. Both vegetables and fruits need to be frozen at their prime ripeness.

            2. Remain active: Fall is a great time to exercise outdoors and shape up. Take advantage of the natural beauty, scents, and tolerable temperatures by walking, running, or biking to get your heart pumping. This will actually help you create good habits for the upcoming holidays and winter season. Be sure to take into account that darkness arrives earlier in the night and stays later in the morning. Be smart and safe.

            3. Drink up: In the summer months, we tend to drink more water because it quenches our thirst due to the warmer temperatures. However, it is just as important to include water in your diet all year round. Eight glasses per day is recommended.

            4. Gain new skills:  Many gyms and fitness classes follow the trend of starting up in the fall. Take advantage of this by discovering a hidden talent and trying something new. Although you may be burning less calories due to a “learning curve”, you’ll be able to master it by next swimsuit season.  There are also social benefits to these kinds of activities.
