Federal grant to enhance healthcare jobs in Southern California city

A Southern California city is set to support the creation of many healthcare careers during the next 48-month period thanks to a federal grant, according to the Contra Costa Times.

The Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, the city of Long Beach and the Pacific Gateway Workforce Investment Network announced last week the $2.816 million award. Three hundred sixty-three new positions will be created and filled within the network of hospitals while as many as 400 employees will be trained and certified.

“About 700 people are going to benefit directly from this grant, and they’re going to be able to provide good healthcare … to those who need it,” Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster said at the announcement.

Both Foster and hospital chief executive officer Diana Hendel distributed certificates to recent graduates of the workforce program.

The four-year grant was issued by the U.S. Department of Labor and is a partnership between the public and private sectors.

The mayor noted the importance of healthcare jobs to the economies of California in general and Long Beach in particular. He credited the strength of the health sector in Long Beach and said the grant will help future activity.
