Indiana school nurse does her part to help diabetes patients

A woman who holds a school nursing job in a Northwest Indiana city is devoted to helping children cope with diabetes, according to a published report.

Tracy Tucker works with the Hammond school system, which holds 42 students who have either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, The Associated Press reports. She is well on her way to becoming a certified diabetes educator after having partaken this past summer in a shadowing program with La Rabida Children's Hospital in Chicago.

Tucker said that the children will have to cope with diabetes' challenges as researchers continue working toward devising a cure and her devotion to the cause has not gone unnoticed.

"I think that she has naturally gravitated to those kids. She enjoys teaching and caring for them," diabetes case manager Cathy Geraci with the hospital told the news source. "Parents and our team have the comfort of knowing trained personnel are caring for children with diabetes while at school."

Nurses work at hospitals, the offices of physicians and nursing facilities, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
