Digitized golf game helps physical, occupational therapy patients

A popular pastime that has an innovative platform on a video game console is playing a key role in encouraging the rehabilitation of various people who are undergoing therapy, according to a published report.

Nintendo Wii golf is being used by people who hold occupational and physical therapy jobs, according to The New York Times. One Georgia rehabilitation facility director sang its praises and said it works very nicely in tandem with what the center offers.

"It really is helpful as an adjunct to what we do in physical therapy," inpatient rehabilitation director Dean Beasley with Doctors Hospital in Augusta told the news source. "It allows the patient to put into practical application what they've done in therapy and, in some cases, it helps them know if they could still play golf."

People who have endured brain trauma, strokes and other injuries can enhance their balance and movement. Those who would like to improve their range of motion and motor coordination also can benefit from Wii golf.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, physical therapists help the recovery of people who have injuries and illnesses with pain management and movement.
