Safety tips for a travel nurse to consider before departing

A travel nurse is often alone on her journey to a new contract location, and traveling alone can exponentially increase the likelihood of safety concerns to crop up. While there is no need for alarm, it is important to be prepared and engage in safe practices to decrease the chances of injury or theft.

A traveling nurse should prepare herself and her car before departure for emergencies that may occur along the way. A few personal safety items to bring along on the journey include a flashlight, cell phone, maps, a copy of directions to the site, a first aid kit and perhaps mace or pepper spray.

Keep a list of important contacts stored in a location other than a cellphone and notify key individuals about expected arrival and departure dates and times. Pack a complete vehicle safety kit, complete with emergency rations and extreme weather clothing, such as a parka.

Check the weather along the route and consistently tune into local weather stations to determine if any storms are on the horizon so that proper shelter can be found in advance. These are just a few safety concerns to consider before venturing out on the road to an assignment.  A traveling nurse can navigate her way safely over any bump in the road with the proper preparation.
