Finding the Right Nursing Job

There is a definite buzz in the air this time of year. College students are taking their final exams, getting ready to throw on the cap and gown, and most importantly finding the right job. So how do you find the right nursing job? What steps need to be taken?

First of all, you need to craft a solid resume. There are multiple websites that discuss how to create that perfect resume. Resume formatting is key to making it past the initial gate keepers. Make sure to ask others to look at your resume and provide feedback. Make an appointment at Career Services to have them review your resume.

Secondly, networking is essential. Who do you know that will help you get your foot through the door?   Where did you do your clinical rotations? Reach out to your preceptors and let them know you’re interested in working there. Do you have family or friends working in a healthcare setting that can put in a good word for you? Don’t be afraid to leverage all networking connections!

Thirdly, is there a particular setting or hospital unit that you’re passionate about? If you’ve been telling your friends for ten years that you want to be a Pediatric Nurse, then start applying for Pediatric jobs.   Some hospitals won’t hire new graduate nurses into every unit. Reach out to your “dream” unit and find out if they take new graduates. If not, how much experience will you need before you can apply?

Next, look at applying to new graduate residency programs. New graduate residencies are geared toward hiring new graduate nurses. Research each residency to see what the application requirements are. Look at the application deadlines to ensure you apply in time.

Finally, start applying for your dream job. Some employers will allow you to apply prior to graduating and passing the NCLEX. Others will want you to have license in hand before you can move forward with the application process. Submit an application directly to the hospital or setting you want. Also use websites like Indeed.com to find jobs. Don’t be afraid to reach out to HR and get updates.

Now that graduation is quickly approaching take the time to find the right nursing job. Realize you may have to submit several applications before you land an interview. Don’t get discouraged. You’ve made it through nursing school and now this is the next step!
