Since winter has decided to grab the entire country in its icy cold grip, we thought it would be nice to share some cold weather tips. Many travelers are from locations that don’t typically see the ice, snow, or sub-zero temperatures that most of the nation is being subjected to recently. Here are a few tips to help you survive Mother Nature’s deep freeze:
- Battery – Make sure the battery is in prime working condition. Many local auto supply stores will test the battery for you. Should you need a new one, they will install it as well.
- Fuel – Good rule of thumb is to fill up once you get to half a tank. Sound a little soon? Some may think so, but you don’t want to get stuck in a rural area without enough fuel to keep you warm while you wait for a tow truck or snow plow.
- Windshield wipers and washer fluid – Make sure the wipers are making contact with the entire windshield. Top off your washer fluid as well. Auto stores also offer de-icer to mix with your regular washer fluid. Whatever you do, DO NOT ADD WATER! I know it sounds like common sense, but people do it to make the washer fluid last longer and it will freeze the entire windshield.
- Tires – Check the tread on your tires and make sure they are not too worn. All-season or even winter tires are an option, but not always necessary. Proper tire inflation is important as well. If you aren’t sure how to do it, stop by the local auto repair shop and they are more than happy to assist.
- Emergency kit – You can purchase a store-packed one, but you can easily create one out of items around your home. Items to include: blanket, boots, extra pair of gloves, a bottle of water, candle/flare, small shovel, cell phone charger, and a few granola bars.
