The seasoned traveler has learned what it takes to make their travel experience smooth and rewarding. Starting out with the proper documentation, an understanding of the role of the traveler, and the right attitude will result in your maximum travel experience.
- Maintain your personnel file. Keep your licenses, certifications, and any health records up-to-date. Have copies of your diplomas and transcripts. Double check that the certification cards are completed correctly and signed. Be sure the copies you send are legible and clear.
- Don’t wait until the last minute to process paperwork and complete competency testing. Give yourself plenty of time to submit compliance, in the event corrections will be needed, and complete testing in a stress-free manner.
- Ask permission of the people you would like to use as references. You will need their most recent contact information, and they will appreciate your request rather than a random, unexpected phone call. Their good attitude, when giving a reference, is always in your favor.
- Understand that premier, vacation locations are generally going to offer a lower pay rate than another less grand location. Determine what your motivation to travel is (money, experience, location), and pick your assignments accordingly.
- The more flexible your requirements for a travel assignment, the more opportunities you will find available to you.
- Occasionally, you will run into hospital politics. Don’t get involved. You’re there to help. Make friends, but don’t take sides.
- Find that right mix of vacation and work. Remember why the facility needed a traveler. Shifts must be covered, even in paradise!
