Prepare for Hazardous Weather on the Road

As evident by the recent weather in some southern states (flooding and tornadoes), not only does Mother Nature send us wonderful spring months to enjoy, she sometimes sends along hazardous weather with them.  Whether you’re a brand new traveler out on your first adventure or a seasoned professional who has been around this country many times, it’s important to be prepared, today more than ever before.  The one thing we can’t control is the weather.  Hazardous weather comes in many forms.  Depending on where your journey is taking you, it can come often and come fast. Know the weather in your area – whether you could be affected by tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, floods or all of the above!

My suggestion, along with many of the Emergency Preparedness Experts, is to plan your route in advance so you know where you are going and bring along with you the appropriate supplies (food, water, extra cash, just to name a few).  There are many people who buy or assemble an Emergency Kit to take along with them in the car.

As you are traveling through this beautiful country, taking in all the new sites and sounds, be sure to stay alert to changing weather conditions.  Many states/communities post their emergency weather number along the highway.  Developed roadside rest areas often have the weather channel displaying on a TV right inside the rest area.  If you’re lucky enough to have invested in a GPS System, many models have an application that carries the weather.

An informational resource for understanding and planning for hazardous weather is the National Weather Service. You can also check out the American Red Cross for tips on what items to include in your Emergency Kit.

Be prepared to keep your family safe as you start out on a new traveling adventure!
