transition

Settling In

Whether you are someone embarking on your first position in the field or merely stepping into a new role within a company, the ability to smoothly transition into a new position is something we all strive to achieve. For most, we tend to be a bit unsure of ourselves during the adjustment period and will take any advice we can get to make the transition as smooth as possible. While I know everyone integrates into a new position at their own pace, some advice I wish I would have had are these three simple tips.

Listen

One of the biggest pieces of advice when starting a new job is to take the time to listen. Not only is it important to take the advice and direction given to you by your superiors and co-workers, but it will also benefit you to observe their daily tasks and conversations they have with both clients and peers. The first couple days tend to be a whirlwind of instructions and new information so it’s ok to take a step back and let it all soak in.

Don’t be afraid to ask

Let’s face it, when we start a new job we tend to have a ton of questions! Take the time to clarify expectations and frequently check in, as your new team expects a load of questions from the newbie. There is no such thing as a stupid question, and now is no exception. Do yourself a favor and take detailed notes from everything you learn as all that newfound information will more than likely overload your brain and those notes will definitely come in hand during a moment of doubt.

Patience

Learning a new trade isn’t something you master in a day or even a week. It’s something that comes with time and takes patience in order to get there. In order to establish yourself in your new job you have to learn what your strengths will be and what you personally bring to the table. It’s important to give it time when it comes to settling in and it’s crucial to keep a positive attitude and open mind during the transition time. You will be a pro in no time – you just have to try and enjoy the journey until that point!

Take advantage of the excitement and energy behind starting a new job, and let it motivate you to put your best foot forward. Show all your new co-workers why you will make a great addition to the team!
