Ready, set, PREPARE!

Preparing for the job search is probably one of the last thoughts on a first year RN student’s mind. However, with how tough the market is, post-graduation prep should be a top priority no matter what year of school you are in. Here are a few tips on how student nurses can prepare for the job search, starting right now!

Start working in a hospital: If you are interested in working as a nurse in the hospital setting then start early! Apply for a CNA or tech position within a hospital. Not only will you gain skills and experience but you will have the opportunity to form relationships with nurses, doctors, hiring managers, etc. All of which may help make your job search a little less stressful.

Volunteer: If you are having trouble finding a job within a hospital, start searching for volunteer opportunities within hospitals! Volunteering is a great way to help others while gaining valuable experience. As a volunteer you will have the opportunity to meet staff members and leaders within the healthcare field.

Build connections during clinical rotations: Forming a relationship with your clinical instructors is key. Remember, as you start applying for positions you will need positive references and who better to ask then your clinical instructor?

Get involved: Consider joining clubs, honor societies, study groups, or your State Student Nursing Association and form connections with other students. The more you are involved in, the more perspective you gain and the more resources you have to be successful!

Noticing a trend in the tips yet? They all involve some form of NETWORKING! Networking and developing genuine relationships are just as important as a well put together resume and cover letter. Whether you are at the beginning stages of nursing school or getting ready to graduate, creating and maintaining fruitful relationships begins now.
