Exercise tips for patients with diabetes [VIDEO]

Transcript

Even though November's National Diabetes Month has drawn to a close, there are a lot of ways travel physical therapy professionals can continue to improve the lives of patients who have diabetes.

If diabetic patients take insulin or pills that help the body produce more insulin, they should eat carbohydrates before their exercises when their blood sugar is less than 100 milligrams per deciliter.

A great exercise for those with Type 2 diabetes is resistance exercises using weights or elastic therapy bands. Determine a safe beginning weight and number of repetitions with your patients so they can work out at least three times a week.

For patients who have an active foot ulcer, travel PTs may advise them to do exercises that don't require bearing their own weight, such as swimming and bicycling.
