Reflections of 2013

As I began to think about what to write for our last blog of the year, I thought there was no better time to create a new tradition. Last year our Senior Student Outreach Coordinator Sunny Snook shared her reflections and this year I would like to leave you with mine.

I will begin by giving thanks for the opportunity to spend my first full year as a part of the Student Outreach team. I am constantly supported and encouraged by people who have enabled me to learn and grow as a recruiter and as a person. I’ve become an expert on timing layovers and have even earned a top tier status on my favorite airline. I have also learned what it is like to spend more time away from home than I ever have before. This has given me a new insight as to how some of you may feel, should you decide to become a traveling therapist.

It has been such a privilege to meet with so many students, new graduates, faculty and staff from all of the university visits and national shows I have attended. I thought eventually I might get exhausted from all of the traveling, but I have found that every time one of you has gotten excited, interested, or thankful for my advice, I forget the exhaustion and am excited to keep traveling and talking with students. Your ambitions have fueled my passion for helping you and it is hard to explain the satisfaction and excitement I receive when you accept your first position.

It is not always rainbows and butterflies. There have been nights spent sleeping in airports, missed plane connections, noisy hotel neighbors, and less than pleasant seat mates on flights. At the end of the traveling season I would be lying if I didn’t say that I am always ready for a long break away from airports and hotels. However, it does not take long before I’m itching to get out there and meet with the next group of students who are anxious to know more about what opportunities await them as graduation approaches.

I feel that my role as a recruiter is to be a liaison to you when it is time to start navigating the job market. The most important thing I want all of you to know is that there are no dumb questions! We are happy to answer each and every question you have, no matter how silly you think it is! In closing, I, along with the Student Outreach Team and the entire Aureus Therapy Team, would like to wish you a safe and happy holiday season. We look forward to seeing what 2014 has to bring!
