Arkansas man bounces back from severe head injury with help from occupational therapist

A Southern Arkansas man who suffered head trauma during an industrial accident while working in an oil field has been waging a valiant effort to bounce back with the assistance of people who hold occupational therapy jobs, according to a published report.

Billy Dennis of El Dorado took a blow from 600 pounds of thick steel casing that had fallen from another piece of equipment in 2008, The Associated Press reports. The material landed on his head and arm from 30 feet high, making the fact that he survived all the more amazing.

"Through my experience as a patient I discovered how beneficial this type of medical treatment was to helping people regain their ability to function in the meaningful activities of their lives," the 34-year-old told the news source last month. "It's amazing what a difference it makes to be able to dress yourself independently, and I felt a great desire to become involved in helping others accomplish things like this."

The occupational therapist with whom Dennis worked for 30 months aided his recovery from severe injuries, enhancing use of his left arm so that he may tackle most daily activities.

Further, the recuperation inspired him to re-orient his professional pursuits and matriculate in an occupational therapy assistant program.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, occupational therapists help patients recover from injuries, illnesses and disabilities.
