Physical therapist notes work of her volunteer mission in Haiti

A woman who holds a physical therapy job in Massachusetts had an eye-opening experience last spring when she visited one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere with a medical aid mission, according to a published report.

Beth Paulhus works at a hospital in Westboro and said she volunteered at a hospital in Haiti, where she observed many differences, The Worcester Telegram & Gazette reports. Her mission's responsibility is to provide rehabilitation services to injured people who live in the Caribbean nation.

"It was truly amazing how they helped one another," the physical therapist told the news source. "It really made me feel grateful for the care we have here … So many people in the world need help. I hope I helped a few people in some way just get up and walk around or feel better."

The work she performed meant so much to her that she plans to return in two years to help in the same fashion.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, physical therapists help patients manage pain and increase range of motion after operations, illnesses and injuries.
