Stay active while aging, physical therapist advises

None of us are getting any younger but one way of doing so gracefully and comfortably is to continue partaking in exercise, a person who holds a physical therapy job told a publication in Central Massachusetts.

A die-hard road runner who has captured top finisher in several regional races, Jackie Shakar, 53, also is an instructor at a community college, The Worcester Telegram & Gazette reports. Her advice during a recent Senior Spectacular health and retirement exposition was really very simple – yet contrary to what would seem to be the norm.

"We encourage people to be less active at the very time we should be encouraging increased activity," the physical therapist said, noting her strong belief in that life lesson was solidified by watching her father's health slow down. He recently died at age 92.

She said she wished she helped her father more and now she is encouraging the same of her 86-year-old mom.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, physical therapists help their patients manage their pain, recover from surgical procedures and increase flexibility.
