Physical therapists benefit people as they age

People who hold physical therapy jobs can provide enormous benefits to individuals as they age, according to a published report.

They can help people control their weight, cut down fat in their midsections, strengthen the density of their bones, enhance the functioning of cognitive skills and help them sleep better, a report in The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel states. Physical therapists' attributes exceed assisting after sickness, injuries and surgical operations.

"Many people think of going to a physical therapist only after illness or injury," President Paul Rockar Jr. with the American Physical Therapy Association said. "However, physical therapists are experts in restoring and improving motion in people's lives. We understand how to help prevent injury from occurring as well as changes in the body that happen with normal aging. With the help of a physical therapist, you can turn midlife into the fittest time of your life."

The organization advises adults become involved in activities that help strengthen muscles at minimum every week.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, physical therapists are projected to see career opportunities grow 39 percent in the decade leading up to 2020.
