Young Somalis orient toward nursing careers in Ohio

A large amount of aspiring nurses from an East African nation are studying in the state of Ohio and driving toward fulfilling nursing jobs, according to a published report.

Young people from Somalia typically are interested in fulfilling medical careers partially because of personal experiences they lived through, leader Hassan Omar with the Somali Community Association of Ohio told The Columbus Dispatch. Some want to return to their native land and help families who are in need of assistance. Others have a desire to remain in the capital of Ohio.

"They saw in their own eyes the shortage of doctors and nurses and other medical issues in refugee camps," Omar told the news source. "There may have been 50,000 or 100,000 people who were not able to get to a doctor."

Roughly 33 percent of the 161 Somali students at Columbus State Community College this fall are enrolled in academic disciplines regarding health studies.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nurses help patients and their families and loved ones understand health conditions while offering advice and support.
