New Jersey physical therapy garden set for opening next month

Crews are putting the final touches on a special garden at a Central New Jersey rehabilitation facility, according to a published report.

Set for opening in October, the physical therapy garden at the Merwick Care & Rehabilitation Center in Plainsboro Township will include tools that enhance strength and flexibility, such as paths of sand, gravel, brick and asphalt, New Jersey Newsroom reports. The facility aims to have patients outside as much as possible alongside people who hold physical therapy jobs.

"Many of the things that happen inside can happen outside," landscape architect Jack Carman with Design for Generations told the news source, noting his work centers on designing therapy gardens. "Nature is a positive distraction. You accomplish so much more being out in the garden. It's a value to the patients, as well as the community."

He said the physical therapy garden at the Plainsboro Township facility is the only one of its type in Central New Jersey.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, physical therapists help patients improve their movement, manage pain and recover from injuries.
