Occupational therapy camp introduces rising high school seniors to industry

A Northeast Pennsylvania college hosted a camp to present occupational therapy jobs to high school students who are set to begin their senior years this fall, according to a news release.

Misericordia University in Dallas offered the students on summer break the chance to learn about the specialty field during the Occupational Therapy Career Exploration Camp last month.

Lasting three days and two nights, the camp provided the chance for campers to learn about the career track, meet and speak with faculty and students in the Misericordia University occupational therapy program and take tours of clinical sites in Northeast Pennsylvania where professionals in the industry ply their trade.

The campers were able to see the myriad of services offered by occupational therapists, which included rehabilitation services that were both inpatient and outpatient. They also saw hospital treatments and pediatric services.

The camp has been a popular outlet for high school students who are interested in the field and exit polls have revealed the camp offered them additional information needed to make an educated decision about their career paths.

Almost half of occupational therapists work in physical, occupational and speech therapy offices, as well as offices of audiologists or hospitals, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
