Camps introduce high school students to medical careers

High school students in Montana had a chance late last month to see what kind of medical careers and opportunities lie ahead for them, according to a published report.

The MedStart Billings Summer Camp was in operation from June 24 through June 29, The Billings Gazette reports. The second annual camp was for juniors and seniors, had lessons about health careers and featured the opportunity for hands-on experiences, such as trying on the clothing worn by professionals while on the job.

"We are all about all of those students who are interested in health careers and our purpose is to get them more interested," program coordinator Mary Helgeson with the Eastern Montana Area Health Education Center told the news source. "The big expectation is that they'll go into some kind of health care career and that they'll choose to do that here."

The students went to clinics, physicians' offices and they partook in a mock rescue with a search and rescue squad.

This summer will see four such camps dispersed throughout the state, according to the camp's website. Three were in late June in Billings, Missoula and Bozeman while one begins this Sunday in Great Falls.
