Physical therapy firm offers tips for safe gardening

Gardening this summer can be so much more enjoyable and, ultimately, productive if practitioners of the hobby prepare accordingly for some of the physically demanding aspects, according to a press release.

Lifting, digging and mowing can be made to be that much less perilous to gardeners if they warm up, stretch out and take other preventative measures, states the press release issued by people who hold physical therapy jobs. Athletico Physical Therapy is hoping that people's ability to employ their green thumbs lasts all summer long.

Overuse of hands is risky to gardening and may be offset by hand exercises and by reducing the forcefulness with which people hold on to equipment. Avoiding awkward movements of the wrist also is important for the hands as well.

Proper bending and lifting are important as well since the movement of heavy objects often is a routine part of gardening. Bags may be cut in half while bending should be done with the knees. The use of a kneeling stool also is important.

Gardeners also should take routine breaks to cool off, replenish with water and stretch, all of which will prove to be beneficial.
