Put a Pep in Your Step

At some point during the work day, we all get the same feeling. No matter how well-rested, how busy, or how much caffeine we have devoured, that afternoon feeling of pure exhaustion seems to hit around the same time – like clockwork. The thing is, the day isn’t over. And the clock? It’s going to stand still until you make a change and start being productive again.

As a medical professional, you have a full schedule. Each of those patients, new and old, expect your best effort every time you see them. They lean on you for knowledge and support during the healing process. So what can you do to ensure you’re on top of your game for each patient? Try these simple activities:

1. Exercise regularly. This has to be scheduled around your work day, but it is probably the most important aspect. Having your eyes open is critical to completing the rest of the following activities, so take that into consideration.  I could give you a thousand more reasons to exercise…but the basics are – it’s healthy, you will sleep better at night, and good sleep is critical to the productivity of any work day.

2.  Cultivate a friendship with each patient. There exists a fine line between wasting time and catching up, but getting to know patients on a more personal level will both gain their trust and get you more excited about the task at hand. Each person has a new case and situation, so avoid simply going through the motions. Plus, who doesn’t like having more friends?

3. Eat small snacks. Try to avoid saving up to eat a big lunch each day. The “full-stomach” feeling will only make you want to find the nearest couch or waiting room chair. Spread out your eating throughout the day with snacks that will keep you going. Protein will slowly release needed energy as the day progresses, while fruit in the afternoon will give you that much needed sugar burst.

4. Stay hydrated. No part of your body is going to function very well if you aren’t drinking any water, including your brain. Hydrate with cups of water throughout the day. The fish will still have plenty of their own, and your body will thank you.

5. Reward yourself. Everyone deserves at least a pat on the back for conquering the challenges of the work day. After you complete a task throughout the day, reward yourself. Listen to a new favorite song or check in on your Facebook or Twitter. Even better, call your incredible Aureus recruiter who is dying to chat and catch up!

6. Take a stroll outside. Nothing’s going to wake you up quite like the bright, warm sun shining on your face. Trust me, it beats my alarm to the punch almost every morning. Get out of the stuffy office or facility and get some fresh air.

7. Smile! This most certainly takes the least amount of effort, yet can have the most positive impact. The simple action is proven to boost any mood, including the moods of those around you. Happiness brings about that energy you need to overcome the dreaded slump.

So there you go. Seven simple things you can do to spice up your work week and keep you refreshed. The once impossible task of surviving the work day just became manageable. The clock is finally moving again, and you’re moving with it.
