The top three things travel physical therapists should pack for summer assignments

Summer is an excellent time for travel physical therapists to go on assignments. The weather is typically more pleasant for getting to your destination and exploring the surrounding area. At work it seems like the sunny skies can lift everyone's spirits, from your coworkers to your patients, making your job as a physical therapist that much more rewarding. During your time off, you can enjoy some of your favorite outdoor activities from hiking to beach volleyball, depending on your location. Yes, it's safe to say this season offers some of the most wonderful opportunities, especially for travel professionals.

However, as you prepare for your assignments this summer, there are a few things you should pack that you may not have needed other parts of the year. It can be easy to overlook some of the essential items while preparing for your next location, so consider this list of summer necessities while packing for your upcoming assignment.

1. Items to keep cool. You will always take being cool and comfortable for granted until you are sweltering under the summer sun. This is why it's important to prepare for the intense heat and direct sun ahead of time. Protect your body from sun damage by packing things like a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Wear the hat and glasses while exploring during your time off or before your shift so you can arrive on the job looking professional and comfortable. Also, try to look for a sunscreen that's added to an everyday moisturizer so you can apply protection as part of your daily routine.

2. Breezy work clothes. Whether you wear a uniform or a simple pants and polo combination while at work, make sure your professional attire offers some air flow. The clinic or hospital you will be assigned will most likely have air conditioning, but you will typically not be able to adjust the temperature and should therefore be prepared for the worst. Therefore, clothing layers are your best friend during the summertime. Wear light clothing, but keep a sweater nearby in case.

3. Comfortable shoes. The heat can take a toll on your body, so be ready to combat this by providing support to your feet. The more comfortable your feet are, the more likely you will be able to remain efficient throughout the work day. You might also want to pack comfortable sandals for weekend trips to local parks, festivals and other opportunities to enjoy your new location.
