Older folks in Central Pennsylvania benefit from physical therapy

Older members of an apartment complex in Central Pennsylvania twice weekly go though one rigorous workout that a local physical therapist praises, according to The Patriot-News.

Typically 60 years of age and higher, the residents of Susquehanna View Apartments in East Pennsboro Township follow the lead of their activity coordinator, a 73-year-old man named Mike Stewart. Some participants are in wheelchairs, others encounter challenges moving their arms but others among the group of about 13 are fully capable of jumping up and around without reservation. The movement is pleasing to a nearby wellness coordinator.

"People are too sedentary, whether it be they don't participate in any exercise program or their job is such that they don’t move around that much during the day," Craig Galic told the news source. "That and other medical issues lead to joint inflexibility, lack of mobility, decreased muscle strength (which happens anyway as we age) which can lead to higher risk of falls and that leads to more problems with fractures and hospital stays."

The 30-minutes sessions occur in the community room and Galic periodically leads the sessions as well.

People who hold physical therapy jobs may work in a variety of places including hospitals, outpatient clinics and private offices, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
