Pediatric therapy program helps children with occupational therapy needs

A program in Chicago merges occupational therapy and gymnastics to help enhance children's functionality, according to WLS-TV.

Kelly Donley devised "I Can We Can" two years ago and it has created opportunity for people with occupational therapy jobs. She also said children find enjoyment in what she created.

"They can have fun and they can be in a more mainstream setting, which parents really enjoy, and then not only that, but it has a lot of equipment that we can use to enhance the therapy," Donley told the news source. "We do one on one and we have small groups. Typically, a child who wants to do a small group setting will start off with one-on-one and after we evaluate the child and assess their level of functioning so we can find a compatible group for them. Everything is tailor-made for the specific child as well as age range and developmental processes."

One client, a 6-year-old suffering from autism and seizure disorder, is the daughter of an on-staff occupational therapist so healthcare staffing also came of the program. She has more energy and is more agile in the gym, her mother said.
