Keep your receipts! Potential tax benefits for a traveling nurse

Often labeled as an independent contractor by the IRS, a traveling nurse may be eligible for a few tax deductions. Many people find filing taxes a stressful chore and carry it out with a “just get it done as quickly as possible” attitude, and a traveling nurse may be no exception. However, in the rush to complete filing, traveling nurses may be overlooking a few potential tax deductions.

Traveling nurses should save their expense receipts to accurately determine the total amount of deductions to claim. With a little hard work, organization and receipts in hand, a check from the IRS may be in the future.

Receipts for tax deduction purposes should be kept for items such as transportation costs, gas, mileage, parking, tolls or public transportation fares. Other items like meals, work related phone expenses, internet and computer service and maintenance, uniform costs and licensing fees fall under potential deductions.

If housing is not included in your contract, add it to the list as a possible tax deduction if employment and residence at the temporary assignment has been less than 12 months.
