Nevada summit sees debate about enhancing nursing jobs

Roughly 1,000 nurse managers recently convened to discuss the state of the industry and two themes that emerged were transforming the delivery of care and the changing role of nursing, HealthLeaders Media reports.

Situated in Las Vegas late last month, the Nursing Management Congress also saw discussion about healthcare reform and the role of nursing while also providing attendees the opportunity to network and exchange tips. Keynote speaker Tim Porter-O’Grady suggested the time has come to re-assess and prioritize when considering issues including medical staffing.

“We’ve been too addicted to our protocols and our rituals,” Porter-O’Grady told the audience.

His suggestions included enhanced mentoring for nurses newly embarking on jobs, embracing technological advancement that will help the industry move forward and exert efforts toward the quality of service provided rather than quantity

Porter-O’Grady is the senior partner of his Atlanta-based namesake consultancy, which works with issues regarding governance, administration, clinical systems, shared governance and mediation of conflict for hospitals, community and healthcare services.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, future opportunities for nursing jobs are projected to be excellent.
