What Makes a Good Traveler?

When I speak with someone about traveling the first thing I ask them is if they like change. This is important for a traveler because the environment changes all the time. Locations change. Hours change. Even coworkers change. Flexibility is something I always look for in a traveler. Quite a few hospitals are in dire need so they need someone who can help where ever needed.

A good traveler is also someone who is very knowledgeable about their modality. They are not afraid to adapt to the way the facilities do things and always willing to learn new things.

Most successful travelers are those who love what they do and like to help people.  They also enjoy traveling and experience new cultures. A sense of adventure helps too!

Healthcare traveling can be a great experience. Look at it as a mini vacation where you can meet new people and make new friends!

  1. Experience in the field makes a great traveler.
I usually encourage new grads to get at least 2 years at a local job under their belt before going out to travel. The last thing you want is to feel overwhelmed when you’re representing an agency. The more experience you have, the greater chance of getting your contracts extended because the facility will be happy that you arrived with the knowledge and confidence necessary to fill their needs from day 1.
