Advantages to Board Certification

The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is the leading entity overseeing certification of physicians in the United States. ABMS develops and implements standards which physicians must meet in order to acquire formal certification in a given specialty as well as Maintenance of Certification (MOC).

After years of schooling, you may feel that undergoing another series of rigorous exams is unnecessary. And, obtaining your Board Certification isn’t easy. However, there are significant benefits that you should seriously consider when deciding whether or not to seek formal certification by ABMS.

Certification demonstrates your commitment to your area of specialty and practicing the highest levels of quality patient care.

This commitment will be recognized by potential employers when you are seeking your first practice opportunity; insurers which you will work with throughout your career as a physician; and patients you are seeking to attract and maintain. You will also be classified among the most well respected physicians in the nation and be eligible for extensive resources and tools provided by ABMS.

Obtaining Board Certification is voluntary, but highly encouraged. While it will require one more step on your part, the rewards are well worth it.
