What’s Your New Year’s Resolution?

With 2014 quickly coming to a close, there is one dreaded question that we will all inevitably hear: “What’s your New Year’s Resolution?!” While a slew of people choose to work out and eat healthier (and there is nothing wrong with that!), there are other non-traditional resolutions that are just as beneficial for you and your well-being. Take a look at these less common resolutions and ring in 2015 with a bang!

Visit at least one new state

Different schedules, tight budgets, only enough time for a weekend away; these are all things that can make planning a vacation tough. However, weekend road trips are relatively easy to pack into a tight schedule! Getting out of town and away from weekday stresses often brings a wave of relaxation and a fresh perspective. Whether it’s a day trip or a week-long getaway, 2015 is the time to experience someplace new!

Random acts of kindness

No matter how often you do them (once a week, once a month, etc.), acts of kindness benefit you, as well as the person on the receiving end. Giving is an act that makes us feel good; we know that we are helping someone else out and that brings us joy. Small surprises can truly make someone’s day. Try to incorporate random acts of kindness into your everyday life!

Find the bliss in everything

Battling winter and chilly weather can make everything seem dreary. This kind of weather causes a lot of people to become unmotivated, somber, and can even cause severe winter blues called Seasonal Affective Disorder. I recently tried yoga for the first time and the instructor emphasized finding the bliss in everything, even things that totally stink. It is not an easy task, but trying to find the light and positivity in all things is so beneficial. It is easy to get caught up in a crummy situation, but try to change perspective and remind yourself that rainbows come after rain!

Make a conscious effort to be a better (insert word here)

If you’ve been wanting to become a better friend, daughter, student…whatever it is, what better time is there than the new year?! However, this is not something that just happens. It can take hard work and effort to make significant changes. Starting out small and gradually building up can make things much easier. Do you want to be a better student? Try studying an additional 30 minutes every day. You may be surprised at the results!

Volunteer your time

I once read a quote that said “Nobody has become poor by giving”. That quote can be taken literally in regards to money; it can also be thought of in giving your time to others. Whether you are giving your time to an animal shelter by walking dogs, or by serving food at a food bank, this is time that you will not regret. We are a large group of capable, fortunate people. Imagine what would happen if every single one of us volunteered! I know that everyone’s schedules are busy, and volunteering your time may not be plausible. If your schedule is tight, donating money or items to shelters is something that does help immensely!

Choose the resolution that’s right for you! No matter what it is, be sure to find a resolution that helps you to achieve your goals. I hope you all have a fantastic holiday season and that 2015 is everything that you want it to be!
