Home Is Where the Heart Is

Packing up your whole life and moving across the country to another state can be stressful and overwhelming. Countless thoughts are running through your head. Am I going to make any friends? Will I like my assignment? Will the location be a good fit for me? Anxiety can get the best of you, and feeling homesick only worsens that anxiety. Here are a few tips to help you adjust and fall in love with your new home as you begin your career as a travel therapist.

Turn down time into “me time”
Instead of spending your down time on the couch watching the entire series of Game of Thrones or constantly checking Facebook to see how everyone else’s life plays out, ditch the technology and go exploring. Walk around your new town and experience the culture. A great way to find out where the best restaurants and attractions are located is to ask the locals. You’re going to be here for a while so you might as well see what there is to do!

Make new friends but keep the old
Walking up to a stranger and striking up a conversation can be quite awkward. However, no one wants to live in a place where there is no one to talk to our hang out with. Get to know your neighbors and the people you see every day. By joining a club such as a gym, church, or sports team, you will easily (and non-awkwardly) make friends. Just be sure to stay connected with friends and family back home. This will provide you with a sense of comfort about your new surroundings.

Turn on, not just up
When starting a new job, it doesn’t take much to feel like an underdog. Do your best to create an atmosphere where you can show your true personality and work ethic. Making your priorities known are extremely important in the work force, however, no one should be working 24/7. Be open to suggestions and take note when someone is willing to show you the “ins and outs” of your new work environment.

Work hard, play hard
The classic work hard, play hard motto, though slightly overused, is extremely important. Working full-time is tiring, but you should find time to get to know the people you will be working with on your assignment. Cutting loose and enjoying your time away from the office is important, but keep in mind you don’t want to hinder any future opportunities by creating a bad reputation for yourself.

It’s easy to feel homesick on assignment, especially if you are a new traveler. If you remember to put yourself out there and follow these few tips, you’ll be well on your way to falling in love with your new home and having a blast on every assignment!
