Missouri hospital begins treating lymphedema

A Missouri medical center is well into treating lymphedema with the assistance of people who hold physical therapy jobs, according to a published report.

Treatment of reduced capacities of the lymphatic system is akin to treatments of cancer, particularly breast cancer, physical therapist and rehabilitation manager Andy Snyder with Fitzgibbon Hospital Rehab Center in Marshall said, according to The Marshall News. The program has been in planning for several months and recently opened to serve members of the communities.

"When I came to Fitzgibbon in December of 2011, I wanted to identify some of the needs of the community," the rehab manager said. "I had worked with lymphedema therapists before and knew Fitzgibbon had a Cancer Center. I thought that an expansion of lymphedema treatment in the Rehab Department would enhance the work done by the cancer center and become an added benefit the community."

The hospital's Fund Development Council opted to support the program, believing it would be helpful for the community.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, physical therapists help patients enhance movement and cope with pain after surgery and injuries.
